From San Juan, Puerto Rico, Andrea Muñiz has always loved to move. They started their movement training at Lena’s Escuela de Gimnasia Rítmica. After many years of rigorous practice, Muñiz decided to focus on ballet and contemporary dance. At Andanza Compañía y Escuela de Danza Contemporánea, they grew into a technically proficient, yet passionate dancer thanks to the guidance of their teachers María Teresa Robles, Lourdes Ortega, and Eloy Ortiz. Andrea had the opportunity to be a part of El Taller de Andanza, where they continued to expand their artistry by performing with the youth company as a soloist and as part of an ensemble. Muñiz was driven to study dance at the collegiate level. They obtained a BFA in Contemporary Dance with an emphasis in choreography and improvisation from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. While at the conservatory, Muñiz performed works by Ron K. Brown, Tommie Waheed Evans, Roderick George, Uri Sands, Kate Weare, and others. They were the rehearsal director for Zoe Scofield’s “When We Were Kings”, performed at the Senior Performance Project in NY and Boston. They also began to develop their voice as a choreographer, mostly working in collaboration and in interdisciplinary settings. They have performed with Benkadi Drum and Dance, The Robin Aren Company, Boston Dance Theater as a guest artist, and at the Berklee Global Jazz Summit. They are currently an artist with Danza Orgánica.
